LDS Church: Marriage ≠ Love, Tells Queers "Get Over It"

As a follow-up to my recent post about Dallin H. Oaks and Lance B. Wickman’s comments on “same-gender attraction,” here is another disappointing position statement from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued in August 2008:

“Marriage is not primarily a contract between individuals to ratify their affections and provide for mutual obligations. Rather, marriage and family are vital instruments for rearing children and teaching them to become responsible adults.” (link)

So there. Even if queers are able to actually love each other in any meaningful way, non-opposite-couple marriage is still uncalled for because marriage isn’t even primarily about love!

Apparently, the LDS Church would rather see a set of opposite-couple parents who lack any sort of meaningful affection for one another attempt to raise children into responsible adults (whatever that means) than they would a pair of queers who are actually in love.
