my patchwork of veganism, philosophy, gender, and activism

Not going to happen

No, I am not going to post that song that I post every time this happens, even though it would be more appropriate than ever before.

So there.

Political Philosophy

“So long as we are justifiably confident that a self-sustaining and just collective life among human beings is realistically possible, we may hope that we or others will someday, somewhere, achieve it—and can then also work toward this achievement. By modeling a realistic utopia as a final moral goal for our collective life, political philosophy can provide an inspiration that can banish the dangers of resignation and cynicism and can enhance the value of our lives even today.”

Even modestly rich axiom systems, such as arithmetic, have the property that there are mathematical statements that are true but that cannot be deduced from the system’s axioms.

Seed banks, even if they’re eleven thousand years old, can’t survive for more than a few years on the shelf. If they aren’t grown out as crops year after year, they die—or else get ground into flour and baked and eaten—and then this product of a thousand hands and careful selection is just gone, once and for all.
Barbara Kingsolver, Small Wonder p. 101, explaining to me a truth about the world i thought virtually nothing of: seeds must grow, or die. (via start-anywhere)

In this module, we will focus on categorical syllogisms. We shall learn the definitions for validity and soundness. We shall learn how validity differs from truth. We shall learn how to identify any categorical syllogism in terms of its mood and figure. And we shall learn techniques to prove whether any categorical syllogism is valid or invalid.

It’s good to be a Philosophy student.

The world’s ending in 2012 or something—there’s a movie.
